Sports Report: Dutchmen Forward Daniel Carr Signs With The Canadiens

The Union Dutchmen forward Daniel Carr signed a two-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens, the NHL team announced yesterday. Carr, the leading scorer for the Dutchmen with 22 goals and 28 assists in 29 games this past season. He joins two other Union Hockey players to sign a contract in the NHL, defenseman Mat Bodie signed earlier with the New York Rangers and Shayne Gotisbehere with the Philadelphia Flyers.

In the NHL playoffs, Boston skated past Detroit 3-2 giving the Bruins a series lead of 3-1, Minnesota won against Colorado 2-1 to tie the series at 2-2, and Los Angeles doubled up San Jose 6-3 stopping the Sharks from completing a series sweep.

In the NBA playoffs, Atlanta defeated Indiana 98-85 to give the Hawks a 2-1 series lead, Memphis outshot Oklahoma City in overtime 98-95 putting the Grizzlies in the lead 2-1, and the Clippers squeaked by Golden State 98-96 to a 2-1 series lead.

Memphis guard Mike Conley has won the NBA's Joe Dumars Trophy for sportsmanship.

In the American League, the Yankees beat Boston 14-5, Oakland blew out Houston 10-1, Baltimore defeated Toronto 11-4, Minnesota bested Tampa Bay 9-7, Detroit topped the White Sox 7-4, and it was Cleveland over Kansas City 5-1.

Major League Baseball has suspended Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda for 10-games after he was caught on the mound with pine tar on his neck. Pineda was ejected in Wednesday night's game against Boston after Red Sox manager John Farrell asked the umpires to check the substance in the second inning of the game.

Yankees pitcher Ivan Nova has decided to have season-ending Tommy John surgery for a partially torn elbow ligament. Nova left last Saturday's 16-1 loss at Tampa Bay in the fifth inning after allowing eight runs and eight hits, including four homers. An MRI then revealed the injury. Nova is scheduled to have the surgery next Thursday.

In the National League, the Mets edged St. Louis 4-1, Cincinnati trumped Pittsburgh 2-1, Arizona beat the Cubs 5-2, San Diego slid past Washington 4-3 in 12, and Philadelphia topped the Dodgers 7-3.

Michael Phelps has lost in the first final of his comeback after a 20-month retirement. Ryan Lochte beat Phelps in the 100-meter butterfly final at the Arena Grand Prix. Lochte touched in 51.93 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than Phelps.
