WAMC Sports Report: UConn Women's Basketball Wins Record Ninth Title

The UConn Huskies women’s basketball team defeated the previously unbeaten Notre Dame 79-58 for a perfect season adding to their record 9 NCAA championship wins, and the school’s 13. UConn is the first school to win both the men and women’s NCAA tournament, a title sweep, in the same year, once in 2004 and then once again this year in 2014. It's the ninth NCAA title for Connecticut and head coach Geno Auriemma, breaking a tie with Pat Summitt for the most in women's history.

In interleague play, Cleveland beat San Diego 8-6, the White Sox bested Colorado 15-3, the Dodgers edged Detroit 3-2  in 10.

In the American League, Baltimore blew out the Yankees 14-5, Texas trumped Boston 10-7, Toronto topped Houston 5-2, Tampa Bay slid past Kansas City 1-0, and it was Seattle over the Angels 5-3.

In the National League, the Mets blanketed Atlanta 4-0, Milwaukee defeated Philadelphia 10-4, San Francisco beat Arizona 7-3, Washington shut out Miami 5-0, Pittsburgh edged the Cubs 7-6, and it was St. Louis over Cincinnati 7-5.

In the NBA, Brooklyn squeaked by Miami 88-87 completing a four game season sweep of the Heat, Detroit topped Atlanta 102-95, Minnesota edged San Antonio 110-91, Dallas out shot Utah 95-83, Oklahoma City outshot Sacramento 107-92, and Houston beat the Lakers 145-130.

In the NHL, the Rangers bested Carolina 4-1, Minnesota skated past Boston in a shoot out 4-3, Ottawa defeated the Islanders 4-1, Detroit edged Buffalo 4-2, Tampa Bay trumped Toronto 3-0, Columbus topped Phoenix in overtime 4-3, Washington won against St. Louis 4-1, Dallas bested Nashville in a shoot out 3-2, and it was Colorado over Edmonton 4-1.

In the Frozen Four, Union College will go head to head with Boston College tomorrow at 5 p.m. on ESPN 2. The winner will play the championship game on Saturday.
