WAMC Sports Report: UConn Takes Home Fourth NCAA Title

UConn defeated Kentucky last night 60-54, for its fourth title victory. Shabazz Napier led the Huskies with 22 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

On top of the men’s NCAA triumph, the Huskies are getting another chance tonight to take home the women’s NCAA championship title, when they go head to head with Notre Dame at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN. Both UConn and Notre Dame are undefeated, but the Huskies are 9-0 for title games in the tournament. UConn is the only team in history to win both men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments in the same year, back in 2004.

In deference to the NCAA men's basketball championship game the NBA took Monday night off.

In interleague play, Colorado beat the White Sox 8-1, and the San Diego vs Cleveland game was postponed due to rain.

In the American League, for Derek Jeter’s final opening day the Yankees defeated Baltimore 4-2,

The Angels bested Houston 9-1, Oakland topped Minnesota 8-3, Boston edged Texas 5-1, and Kansas City slid past Tampa Bay 4-2.

In the National League, St. Louis trumped Cincinnati 5-3, and the Milwaukee vs Philadelphia game was postponed due to rain.

In the NHL, Calgary beat New Jersey 1-0 leading to a clinched playoff spot for the Rangers, Minnesota skated past Winnipeg 1-0, and Anaheim shut out Vancouver 3-0.

Boston has clinched the best record in the Eastern Conference, Pittsburgh, Montreal, and the Rangers have spots in the playoffs, meanwhile Buffalo, Florida, and the Islanders have been eliminated from playoff contention.

On Thursday in men’s college hockey, Union will see Boston College in the Frozen Four, at 5 p.m. on ESPN 2.
