WAMC Sports Report: Sweet Sixteen Set; Union Hockey Takes Home Championship

The Sweet 16 has taken form with a major upset when No. 8 Kentucky slid past the undefeated No. 1 Wichita State 78-76.  In Memphis on Thursday, No. 1 Florida will see No. 4 UCLA at 9:45PM on CBS.  And No. 11 Dayton, which defeated No. 3 Syracuse 55-53 last weekend, plays against No. 10 Stanford on Thursday at 7:15PM on CBS. In Anaheim on Thursday, No. 1 Arizona has a game with No. 4 San Diego State at 10:17PM on TBS. And No. 6 Baylor will see No. 2 Wisconsin at 7:47PM on TBS. In Indianapolis on Friday, No. 8 Kentucky plays No. 4 Louisville at 9:45PM on CBS. And No. 11 Tennessee has a game with No. 2 Michigan at 7:15PM on CBS.

No. 7 UConn out shot No. 2 Villanova 77-65 and will go head to head with No. 3 Iowa State on Friday at 7:27PM in Madison Square Garden on TBS. Right after at 9:57PM, No. 1 Virginia sees No. 4 Michigan State also on TBS.

In the NCAA women’s tournament, No. 15 UAlbany was defeated by No. 2 West Virginia 76-61. No. 1 UConn bested No. 16 Prairie View A&M 87-44 and will go on to face No. 9 Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday at 7:05PM in Storrs, CT on ESPNU. Marist suffered an 87-65 loss to Iowa Sunday night.

Union College defeated Colgate over the weekend 5-2 to take its third straight ECAC Hockey Championship. They were only team to do so since 1977 and the third team in history of the conference.

In the NBA, Brooklyn edged Dallas 107-104, Cleveland slid past New York 106-100, Toronto beat Atlanta 96-86, Phoenix defeated Minnesota 127-120, Denver bested Washington 105-102, Sacramento topped MIlwakee 124-107, it was the LA Lakers over Orlando 103-94.

In the NHL, The NY Islanders shut out Columbus 2-0, St Louis beat Pittsburgh 1-0, Nashville bested Chicago 2-0, New Jersey out shot Toronto 3-2, Minnesota defeated Detroit in overtime 4-3, Vancouver topped Buffalo 4-2, it was Anaheim over Florida 6-2.

This past weekend opened the Major League Baseball season with two Los Angeles wins over Arizona 3-1, 7-5.
