Boston Takes Game 1 Of The World Series, And Unapologetically

David Ortiz, Mike Napoli and Jon Lester were quite a combination for the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night.

Ortiz and Napoli drove in three runs apiece as Boston clobbered the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 at Fenway Park. Ortiz hit a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly after Napoli put the Red Sox ahead with a three-run double in the first inning. Ortiz's got a sac-fly in the second inning and a home run five innings later. The two-run blast drove in Dustin Pedroia, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI single and two runs scored.

The Cards didn’t score until Matt Holliday homered off Ryan Dempster leading off the ninth. Game 2 is Thursday night at Fenway. John Lackey is slated to start for Boston against Michael Wacha.

In the NFL, Peyton Manning sat out of practice because of a sore ankle as the Denver Broncos began preparations for the Washington Redskins.

Following its Monday loss to the NY Giants, Vikings quarterback Josh Freeman is experiencing concussion-like symptoms. That means Christian Ponder will start Sunday night against Green Bay.

The New England Patriots have re-signed veteran defensive lineman Andre Carter.

And the New York Giants placed starting center David Baas on injured reserve for an injured left knee.

Checking NBA preseason action, Boston defeated Brooklyn 101-97. Milwaukee passed New York 105-95. Toronto beat Memphis 108-72. Minnesota beat Philadelphia 125-102. Washington won against Cleveland 101-82. Miami topped New Orleans 108-95. Dallas beat 98-88. Phoenix took Denver 98-79. Chicago slid past Oklahoma City 104-95. Golden State fell to Sacramento 91-90 and Utah lost to the Clippers 103-99.

Finally in the NHL, Ottawa bested Detroit 6-1 and it was Boston over Buffalo 5-2.
