Sox Blank Detroit 1-0, One Step Closer To World Series

In baseball, one run was enough for the Red Sox to take a two-games-to-one lead in the American League Championship Series. John Lackey combined with three relievers on a six-hitter as Boston blanked the Tigers 1-0 in Detroit. Mike Napoli homered off losing pitcher Justin Verlander in the top of the seventh.

Meanwhile in the National League Championship Series, St. Louis got within one victory of another World Series appearance. Matt Holliday went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer as the Cards beat the Dodgers 4-2 to take a three-games-to-one lead in the series.

Checking the NHL, it took eight games, but the Sabres finally have their first win of the season.

The Sabres trailed three times before beating the New York Islanders 4-3. Mike Foligno tied it with 2:01 left in regulation before Thomas Vanek and Tyler Myers scored on Buffalo's two shootout attempts.

Chicago topped Carolina 3-2. Pittsburgh beat Edmonton 3-2. Toronto bested Minnesota 4-1. Vancouver passed Philadelphia 3-2. Detroit won against Columbus 2-1. Tampa Bay defeated Los Angeles 5-1. It was Nashville over Florida 4-3. Montreal blanked Winnipeg 3-0. San Jose cruised past St. Louis 6-2. Colorado defeated Dallas 3-2 and Phoenix fell to Ottawa 4-3 in overtime.

In NBA preseason action, Brooklyn edged ahead of Boston 82-80. Golden State passed the Lakers 100-95. Charlotte beat Cleveland 92-74. Washington bounced Miami 100-82. Denver lost against Oklahoma City 109-81. Memphis took Milwaukee 102-99 and it was the Clippers over Phoenix 102-96.

In the NFL, Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo isn’t expected to play again this season after undergoing surgery for a torn pectoral muscle.

In soccer, the United States did Mexico a favor Tuesday killing Panama's shot at a berth in next year's World Cup. The Americans had a 3-2 win.
