Bengals pass Steelers 20-10; Zach Johnson Wins BMW Championship

In the NFL, a rookie running back burned the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday night. Giovani Bernard scored his first two NFL touchdowns as the Bengals doubled up the Steelers 20-10 in Cincinnati. It was a 10-10 game in the third quarter until Bernard turned a short pass into a 27-yard TD.

Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard has admitted to violating probation by drinking alcohol and driving in Nebraska in July. Dennard appeared yesterday in district court in Lincoln. A judge will announce at a disposition hearing in December whether Dennard's probation will be revoked. He remains free until then.

In baseball, there's still a two-way tie for first in the National League Central. The Pirates remain deadlocked with St. Louis following Pittsburgh's 2-0 loss to San Diego. Cincinnati is 2 ½ games off the NL Central pace after the Reds' 6-1 win at Houston. The Dodgers still have a magic number of four for winning the NL West after losing 2-1 to Arizona. Milwaukee topped the Cubs 6-1. It was Colorado over St. Louis 6-2 and Philadelphia cruised ahead of Miami 12-2.

In the American League, Tampa Bay has won a battle of the AL wild-card leaders, knocking off Texas 6-2. The Angels trumped Oakland 12-1. Oakland's magic number for claiming the AL West crown remains seven. Detroit doubled up Seattle 4-2. Kansas City defeated Cleveland 7-1 and Minnesota fell to the White Sox 12-1.

Checking the NHL, the New Jersey Devils beat the New York Rangers 2-1 in the preseason opener for both teams.

In golf, Zach Johnson shot a final round 6-under-65 to win the BMW Championship. The round was completed on Monday because of bad weather the previous afternoon.

Finally, a Westfield/Brocton football player injured by a blow to the head during a game Friday has died. The Buffalo News reports Damon Janes died last night.
