Cowboys Take Giants On Opening Sunday

It was the first Sunday of the NFL season  and Dallas took advantage of six Giants turnovers in a 36-31 win over New York.

Elsewhere, Stephen Gostkowski hit a 35-yard field goal with 5 seconds left to send the New England Patriots to a season-opening 23-21 win over the Buffalo Bills. The Jets edged ahead of Tampa Bay 18-17. New Orleans moved past Atlanta 23-17. Chicago won against Cincinnati 24-21.  Kansas City crushed Jacksonville 28-2. Miami bested Cleveland 23-10. Detroit took Minnesota 34-24. It was Indianapolis over Oakland 21-17. Seattle passed Carolina 12-7. Tennessee trumped Pittsburgh 16-9. St. Louis beat Arizona 27-24 and Green Bay fell to San Francisco 34-28.

In baseball, the Yankees won 4-3 over the Red Sox, leaving the AL East-leading Red Sox 7 ½ games ahead of Tampa Bay.

The White Sox doubled up Baltimore 4-2, leaving the Birds two games behind the Rays for the last AL wild-card slot.

Kansas City beat Detroit 5-2. Detroit's lead in the AL Central remains 5 ½ games over Cleveland. Toronto blanked Minnesota 2-0. Texas edged the Angels 4-3.

Oakland beat Houston 7-2. Oakland still owns a 1 ½-game lead over Texas in the AL West. And Tampa Bay defeated Seattle 4-1.

In the National League, Washington took Miami 6-4. Atlanta suffered its fourth consecutive loss to keep its magic number at nine for winning the NL East, losing to Philadelphia 3-2. St. Louis defeated Pittsburgh 9-2.

Milwaukee won against the Cubs 3-1. San Francisco beat Arizona 3-2. San Diego beat Colorado 5-2 and Cincinnati topped the Dodgers 3-2.

In interleague play, the Mets defeated Cleveland 2-1. That dropped the Indians two games behind Tampa Bay for the final Al wild-card berth.

In tennis, Serena Williams is a major singles champion for the 17th time, and the fifth at the U.S. Open. The top-seeded Williams survived a second-set meltdown to beat No. 2 Victoria Azarenka, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1.
