Red Sox Pummel Tigers 20-4

In baseball, the Boston Red Sox pummeled the Detroit Tigers 20-4 last night. David Ortiz hit two of Boston's eight home runs and also doubled for his 2,000th career hit. The AL East-leading Red Sox took two of three from the AL Central-leading Tigers and kept the best record in the American League.

Elsewhere, Robinson Cano was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBIs as the New York Yankees won for the fifth time in six games, beating the Chicago White Sox 6-5 to complete a three-game sweep. Houston passed Minnesota 6-5. Oakland cruised ahead of Texas 11-4. Cleveland beat Baltimore 6-4. Seattle beat Kansas City 6-4 and Tampa Bay topped the Angels 3-1.

In the National League, it was the Mets over Atlanta 5-2. The Cubs bested Miami 9-7. San Francisco cruised past San Diego 13-5. Washington defeated Philadelphia 3-2. St. Louis won against Cincinnati 5-4 in 16 innings. Milwaukee edged Pittsburgh 9-3 and the Dodgers fell to Colorado 7-5.

In interleague play it was Arizona over Toronto 4-3.

In the NFL, the Jets are going with rookie Geno Smith at quarterback for the season opener with Tampa Bay on Sunday. The move was expected after veteran Mark Sanchez went down with a right shoulder injury in an exhibition game against the Giants on Aug. 24.

In tennis, Rafael Nadal remains unbeaten in hard-court matches this year after advancing to the U.S. Open semifinals. The second-seeded Nadal made quick work of 19th-seeded Tommy Robredo, 6-love, 6-2, 6-2. Nadal is 20-0.

On the women’s side, Victoria Azarenka and top seed Serena Williams are one match victory away from meeting in the finals.
