Red Sox Sweep Chicago After 7-6 win

In baseball, David Ortiz had two hits and three RBIs to help power the Red Sox past Chicago 7-6 yesterday and complete a three-game sweep. Stephen Drew added a solo homer for the AL East-leading Red Sox, who won for the seventh time in eight games.

Elsewhere in the American League, Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy hit three-run homers while Baltimore was erupting for seven runs in the seventh inning to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 7-3 win over the Yankees. Kansas City blanked Toronto 5-0. Cleveland shut out Detroit 4-0. Houston beat Seattle 2-0. Minnesota doubled up Texas 4-2 and Oakland beat Tampa Bay 5-1.

In the National League, it was Washington over the Mets 6-5. St. Louis cruised ahead of Pittsburgh 7-2. The Cubs defeated Philadelphia 7-1. Colorado bested Cincinnati 7-4. The Dodgers won against San Diego 2-1. San Francisco downed Arizona 8-2 and Miami blanked Atlanta 7-0.

In the NFL, Rob Gronkowski took part in his first full-pads practice with the New England Patriots since undergoing back surgery in June.

In college football, No. 9 Louisville crushed Ohio 49-7.

In golf, on a course softened by rain that caused a re-start of the third round, Sergio Garcia two-putted for birdie on the 18th hole to take a two-shot lead into the final round in the Deutsche Bank Championship.

In tennis, Serena Williams moved into the U.S. Open quarterfinals beating Sloane Stephens. On the men’s side, Andy Murray won over Germany’s Florian Mayer.

In NASCAR, Kyle Busch took the checkered flag at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Finally at Saratoga Race Course, Sweet Reason won the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes, paying $7.00 to win.
