In baseball news, Derek Jeter was back, and the Yankees felt a lot better.

The Yankees captain singled on his first pitch of the season, scored a run and went 1 for 4 with an RBI groundout in his return from a nine-month layoff to help New York beat Kansas City 8-4 Thursday. He left for a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.

Daniel Nava hit a two-out single in the top of the 10th inning to score pinch-runner Jackie Bradley Jr., and the Boston Red Sox rallied from a four-run deficit for the second time in a four-game series to beat the Mariners 8-7 in 10 innings.

Elsewhere in the American League, Cleveland doubled up Toronto 4-2. Tampa Bay beat Minnesota 4-3. It was the White Sox over Detroit 6-3 and Baltimore defeated Texas 3-1.

Checking the National League, Philadelphia topped Washington 3-1. Atlanta edged ahead of Cincinnati 6-5. The Cubs blanked St. Louis 3-0. Arizona outscored Milwaukee 5-3. The Dodgers bested Colorado 6-1 and San Diego fell to San Francisco 4-2.

Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman and Toronto reliever Steve Delabar have won the fan voting for the last spots in the All-Star game.

Freeman's victory means Dodgers sensation Yasiel Puig will not get to play in the July 16 game at Citi Field unless he is added as an injury replacement. Freeman set a record with 19.7 million votes, and Puig was second. Delabar won with 9.6 million votes.

In the NFL, Alfonzo Dennard of the New England Patriots has been arrested and accused of driving drunk in Lincoln, Neb., where he once starred as a Nebraska defensive back.

Finally, Germany's Marcel Kittel won the 12th stage of the Tour de France.
