Mets Outlast Giants In 16 Inning Game

In baseball news, Eric Young scored on shortstop Brandon Crawford's fielding error with two outs in the 16th inning, and the Mets outlasted the San Francisco Giants 4-3 in a game that lasted 5 hours, 26 minutes.

Elsewhere, Kansas City outscored the Yankees 5-1. That's the 17th time the Yanks have scored one run or less this season. That happened 18 times all last year.

Seattle trounced Boston 11-4. The 41-year-old Raul Ibanez hit his 22nd home run for the Mariners. He has nine homers in his last 17 games. Red Sox left-hander Andrew Miller will have surgery on his injured left foot and likely miss the rest of the season.

In the American League, Detroit doubled up Cleveland 4-2 in 10 innings. Texas passed Baltimore 8-5 and Tampa Bay defeated Minnesota 7-4

In the National League, it was Philadelphia over Washington 3-2. Phillies slugger Ryan Howard needs surgery to repair a tear in his left knee and will miss at least six to eight weeks. Miami fell to Atlanta 7-1 in 14 innings.

Milwaukee defeated Cincinnati 4-3. Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez saved the game by robbing Joey Votto of a two-run home run reaching over the center field wall for the final out at Miller Park. The Dodgers bested Arizona 6-1 and Colorado edged ahead of San Diego 4-2.

Lastly, in interleague play, Oakland beat Pittsburgh 2-1 and the Cubs defeated the White Sox 8-2.

Mark Appel, last month’s No.1 Major League Baseball draft pick, will be on the mound at 11 this morning for the Tri-City ValleyCats in what could be his last Capital Region appearance.  

In the NFL, a Massachusetts judge says he will release impounded search warrant materials today in the murder case involving former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.

Finally, receiver Victor Cruz signed a six-year extension through the 2018 season with the New York Giants.
