WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In baseball news, checking the American League, Tampa Bay won 8-3 over the Yankees on Sunday. Elsewhere the Red Sox edged ahead of Cleveland 6-5.Toronto beat Baltimore 6-5. Detroit defeated Minnesota 6-1. The Angels passed Kansas City 5-2. Oakland beat Houston 6-2 and Seattle won against Texas 4-3. That game lasted 13 innings.

In the National League, the Mets doubled up Atlanta 4-2. The Cubs defeated Cincinnati 5-4. That game lasted 10 innings. Washington beat Philadelphia 6-1. Milwaukee fell to Pittsburgh 5-4. San Francisco won against Colorado 7-3. Arizona defeated San Diego 6-5 and St. Louis beat the Dodgers 5-3.

Checking interleague play, it was the White Sox over Miami 5-3.

Moving over to the NBA playoffs, the Miami Heat are back in control of the Eastern Conference finals. LeBron James scored 22 points and the Heat shot 55 percent in a 114-96 win over the Pacers at Indiana, giving Miami a 2-1 series lead.

In the NHL playoffs, the San Jose Sharks have forced a Game 7 in their Western Conference semifinal series after beating Los Angeles 2-1.

In other sports news, Tony Kanaan is the winner of the Indianapolis 500. 10 fans were injured at the Coca-Cola 600 when a nylon rope supporting a Fox Sports overhead television camera fell from the grandstands and landed on the track surface. None of the injuries are considered life threatening. Kevin Harvick was the winner of that race.

Finally, Robbie Rogers became the first openly gay male athlete to play in a U.S. professional league making his Major League Soccer debut with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
