In major league baseball, checking the American League, Stephen Drew hit his second career grand slam and the Red Sox beat the Rays 9-2. Jon Lester stayed unbeaten, allowing two runs in seven innings to help end the Rays' season-best six-game winning streak. Elsewhere, Raul Ibanez hit a grand slam and two-run homer at Yankee Stadium to help Seattle rout New York 12-2. Houston defeated Detroit 7-5. The White Sox won against Minnesota 9-4. Texas beat Oakland 6-2 and Kansas City passed the Angels 9-5.
In the National League, St. Louis doubled up the Mets 4-2. Arizona edged ahead of Atlanta 5-3. Pittsburgh beat Milwaukee 3-1. Cincinnati shut out Miami 4-0. The Cubs doubled up Colorado 6-3 and Washington fell to the Dodgers 3-1. Zack Greinke got the win and delivered an RBI single. This was Greinke's first game since being injured last month.
Checking interleague play, Toronto cruised ahead of San Francisco 11-3.
San Diego doubled up Baltimore 8-4 and it was Cleveland over Philadelphia 10-4.
In the NBA playoffs, Miami has taken another step toward the NBA championship eliminating Chicago 94-91 in Game 5. LeBron James scored 23 points.
The Heat now moves onto the Eastern Conference finals against either New York or Indiana. That game is happening at 8:00 p.m. The Knicks are down 3-1 in that series. Only eight NBA teams have overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a series.
Elsewhere, the Grizzlies eliminated Oklahoma City 88-84 and are going to the Western Conference finals for the first time in franchise history.
A person familiar with the decision says New York Jets quarterback David Garrard plans to retire because of knee issues.
Finally, in the NHL playoffs, Chicago defeated Detroit 4-1.
