WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the NHL playoffs, Tomas Vokoun stopped 31 shots in his first playoff start in six years and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New York Islanders 4-0 on Thursday night in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series. The Penguins lead the series 3-2. Game 6 is Saturday in New York. Elsewhere it was Ottawa over Montreal 6-1 and Chicago beat Minnesota 5-1. Tonight the New York Rangers take on the Capitals in Game 5. The series is tied at two games apiece.

In baseball news, checking interleague play, the Yankees won against Colorado 3-1. Robinson Cano hit a home run and also had an infield single for his 1,500th hit. Detroit fell to Washington 5-4.

In the American League, Minnesota topped Boston 5-3. Cleveland overcame Oakland 9-2. Major League Baseball acknowledged that an “improper call” was made by umpires in the ninth inning of Wednesday night’s game between the Indians and the A’s. Kansas City passed Baltimore 6-2. Tampa Bay defeated Toronto 5-4 and the Angels won against Houston 6-5. That game lasted over four hours.

Checking the National League, the Mets outscored Pittsburgh 3-2. Arizona beat Philadelphia 2-1 and Atlanta doubled up San Francisco 6-3.

In the NBA playoffs the Knicks take on the Pacers tomorrow in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinals.

In golf news, Roberto Castro tied the course record with a 9-under-63 to grab the opening round lead at The Players Championship. His round featured seven birdies and an eagle on the par-5 second hole.

The UAlbany men’s lacrosse team will face No. 4 seed Denver on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

A sad story this morning, 1 72-foot-long Sweedish sailboat capsized yesterday in San Francisco Bay while practicing for the upcoming America’s Cup races, killing Olympic gold medalist Andrew “Bart” Simpson.
