In the NBA playoffs, the Knicks beat the Pacers 105-79 Tuesday night to even the Eastern Conference semifinals at one game. Carmelo Anthony scored 32 points. Iman Shumpert added 15 points, including a sensational follow dunk in the first half. Game 3 is Saturday at Indianapolis. Elsewhere, the Grizzlies earned a 99-93 win at Oklahoma City. Thunder forward Kevin Durant  contributed 36 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

In other NBA news, Phil Jackson has informed the Brooklyn Nets he will not be their new coach.

Checking NHL playoff action, the New York Islanders tied their first-round series with Pittsburgh winning 6-4. Game 5 is Thursday in Pittsburgh. Elsewhere, Ottawa beat Montreal 3-2. Chicago shut out Minnesota 3-0 and San Jose bested Vancouver 4-3.

In baseball news, checking interleague play, the Mets shut out the White Sox 1-0. Colorado shut out the Yankees 2-0. Milwaukee doubled up Texas 6-3 and Pittsburgh topped Seattle 4-1.

In the American League, Minnesota won against Boston 6-1. Joel Hanrahan is on the disabled list for the second time this season after straining his right forearm. Baltimore slid past Kansas City 4-3. Cleveland shut out Oakland 1-0. Toronto beat Tampa Bay 6-4 and Houston edged ahead of the Angels 7-6.

In the National League, it was Cincinnati over Atlanta 5-4. St. Louis fell to the Cubs 2-1. Arizona outscored the Dodgers 5-3. San Diego trumped Miami 5-1 and Philadelphia beat San Francisco 6-2.

In other sports news, the UAlbany women’s softball team heads as the No. 1 seed into the league tournament at Binghamton that starts Thursday. UAlbany plays Stony Brook at 1 p.m.

Finally, Manchester United confirmed Wednesday that Alex Ferguson would retire as manager after 26 seasons.
