WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In baseball news, checking interleague play, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the New York Yankees 6-2 on Thursday night. The Yankees failed to complete a three-game sweep after learning captain Derek Jeter again fractured his left ankle and will be sidelined until after the All-Star break. Elsewhere, the Cubs beat Texas 6-2.

In the American League, Jon Lester pitched seven strong innings, and the Boston Red Sox got their sixth straight win with a 6-3 victory over Cleveland. Seattle shut out Detroit 2-0. Baltimore outscored Tampa Bay 10-6 and Toronto defeated the White Sox 3-1.

In the National League, the Colorado Rockies beat the New York Mets 11-3. It was 28 degrees at the start of the game, tying the Rockies' record for the coldest home start. Elsewhere, Milwauke beat San Francisco 7-2. Atlanta defeated Pittsburgh 6-4. St. Louis won against Philadelphia 4-3 and Cincinnati crushed Miami 11-1.

Checking the NHL, the NY Rangers topped Florida 6-1. The NY  Islanders past Toronto 5-3.  Ottawa defeated Washington 3-1. St. Louis beat Phoenix 2-1.Winnipeg beat Carolina 4-3. Dallas defeated Vancouver 5-1. Los Angeles finished ahead of Columbus 2-1 and San Jose beat Minnesota 6-1.

Following the messy firing of basketball coach Mike Rice, Rutgers has turned to one of its greatest players to lead the basketball program. A person familiar with the situation tells the Associated Press that Lakers assistant Eddie Jordan has reached a tentative agreement to take over as coach of the scandal-marred program.

Authorities say one of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing is dead and a massive manhunt is underway for another.
