WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In golf, Adam Scott holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to beat Angel Cabrera and win the Masters. Scott and Cabrera birdied the final hole of regulation and parred the first sudden-death hole. Cabrera almost pulled out his third Major title, but his birdie try on the first extra hole just missed the cup. It’s the first time an Australian has won the Masters.

In the NBA, the Knicks topped Indiana 90-80 and are now guaranteed home-court advantage for the first two rounds of the playoffs and will meet Boston in the conference quarterfinals. Carmelo Anthony shot just 9-for-23 but finished with 25 points.

Elsewhere, the Brooklyn Nets fell to Toronto 93-87. The Lakers won their first game since losing Kobe Bryant to a torn Achilles beating San Antonio 91-86. Houston topped Sacramento 121-100. Jimmer Fredette scored 10 points. Miami beat Chicago 105-93. Philadelphia beat Cleveland 91-77. Denver defeated Portland 118-109 and Dallas won against New Orleans 107-89.

Checking baseball, in the American League, Brett Gardner hit his first home run off a left-handed pitcher since July 2010, leading the Yankees over the Baltimore Orioles 3-0. The Red Sox shut out Tampa Bay 5-0. The White Sox beat Cleveland 3-1. Kansas City outscored Toronto 3-2.

The Angels won against Houston 4-1. Detroit crushed Oakland 10-1 and Seattle beat Texas 4-3.

In the National League, Philadelphia beat Miami 2-1. Atlanta shut out Washington 9-0. Pittsburgh slid past Cincinnati 10-7. San Francisco edged ahead of the Cubs 10-7. Colorado bested San Diego 2-1 and Arizona led the Dodgers 1-0.

In the NHL, Buffalo defeated Tampa Bay 3-1 and Detroit shut out Nashville 3-0.

On Saturday night, Yale won its first NCAA hockey championship with a 4-0 victory over top-seeded Quinnipiac.

The Times Union reports that RPI has extended Hockey Coach Seth Appert’s deal through the 2020-21 season.

Finally, today is the 117th Boston Marathon and about 27,000 runners will head to the starting line.
