WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the men’s NCAA basketball tournament, we are finally down to the last two teams. Over the weekend Syracuse fell to Michigan 61-56 and Louisville defeated Wichita St. 72-68. The two teams will square off tonight at 9:23 for the title in Atlanta, Georgia.

In the women’s NCAA basketball tournament, there will be an all-Big East title game on Tuesday after Louisville and Connecticut advanced last night. UConn ended Notre Dame's team-record 30-game winning streak whipping the Irish 83-65 and the Cardinals knocked off California 64-57.

In baseball news, CC Sabathia pitched seven scoreless innings lifting the New York Yankees to a 7-0 win over the Detroit Tigers yesterday. The Red Sox crushed Toronto 13-0. Third basemen Will Middlebrooks hit three home runs. Elsewhere in the American League, Minnesota beat Baltimore 4-3. Cleveland shut out Tampa Bay 13-0. Oakland outscored Houston 9-3. The White Sox beat Seattle 4-3 and Texas topped the Angels 7-3.

In the National League, the Mets beat Miami 4-3. Cincinnati doubled up Washington 6-3. Atlanta finished ahead of the Cubs 5-1.  The Dodgers topped Pittsburgh 6-2. Colorado cruised ahead of San Diego 9-1 and St. Louis beat San Francisco 14-3.

Checking interleague play, Kansas City slid past Philadelphia 9-8.

In the NBA, New York won against Oklahoma City 125-120. Boston edged ahead of Washington 107-96. The Clippers defeated the Lakers 109-95. Memphis beat Sacramento 89-87. Jimmer Fredette scored 13 points. Cleveland topped Orlando 91-85. Detroit outscored Chicago 99-85. Golden State fell to Utah 97-90 and Dallas beat Portland 96-91.

Checking the NHL, Buffalo beat New Jersey 3-2. St. Louis shut out Detroit 1-0. Dallas defeated San Jose 5-4. Minnesota shut out Columbus 3-0. Florida beat Ottawa 2-1. Chicago topped Nashville 5-3 and Washington doubled up Tampa Bay 4-2.
