WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the NBA, it's now a five-game winning streak for the New York Knicks and a five-game losing skid for the Boston Celtics. J.R. Smith poured in 32 points and Carmelo Anthony added 29 as the Knicks hammered the Celtics 100-85 in Boston. The game was tied at 35 until the Knicks scored 14 straight points to take control. The Celtics committed 20 turnovers compared to eight for the Knicks.

Elsewhere, Minnesota beat Detroit 105-82 and Dallas edged ahead of the Clippers 109-102.

Checking the NHL, Toronto slid past Florida 3-2. Pittsburgh beat Montreal 1-0. The NY Islanders won against Washington 3-2. Winnipeg topped Carolina 4-1. Tampa Bay defeated Buffalo 2-1. The NY Rangers overcame Philadelphia 5-2. Chicago shut out Calgary 2-0 and Vancouver beat Columbus 1-0 in a shootout.

In women’s college basketball, Baylor crushed Florida St. 85-47. Notre Dame defeated Iowa 74-57. Stanford beat Michigan 73-40. Duke outscored Oklahoma St. 68-59. Kentucky beat Dayton 84-70. LSU bested Penn St. 71-66 and Louisville topped Purdue 76-63.

In baseball spring training action, St. Louis bested the Mets 11-4. Houston tied the Yankees 4-4. Philadelphia crushed Tampa Bay 10-1 and Arizona beat the Angels 7-1.

In other sports news, the U.S. men's soccer team earned a scoreless draw against Mexico for only their second point in a World Cup qualifier.

Five-time champion Serena Williams has advanced to the Sony Open semifinals.
