WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

Saint Mary's and North Carolina A&T are the first two winners in the NCAA men's basketball tournament. Saint Mary's moved into the second round with a 67-54 win over Middle Tennessee.

North Carolina A&T won against Liberty 73-72 and tonight LIU Brooklyn takes on James Madison in Dayton, Ohio.

In the NBA, Indiana defeated Orlando 95-73. Denver slid past Oklahoma City 114-104. Milwaukee beat Portland 102-95 and Sacramento won against the Clippers 116-101. Jimmer Fredette scored three points.

In other NBA news, the New York Knicks say All-Star center Tyson Chandler is expected to miss about a week and Kurt Thomas will be sidelined for at least two as injuries continue to plague their frontcourt. Leading scorer Carmelo Anthony has missed three straight games after having fluid drained from his right knee.

In the NHL, the NY Rangers beat New Jersey 3-2. Ottawa defeated the NY Islanders 5-3. Buffalo edged ahead of Montreal 3-2. Pittsburgh bested Washington 2-1. Florida beat Carolina 4-1. Columbus defeated Nashville 4-3. Winnipeg won against Boston 3-1. Vancouver beat St. Louis 3-2 and Los Angeles topped Phoenix 3-2.

In baseball spring training action, Philadelphia bested the Yankees 4-1. Baltimore beat Boston 8-7. Seattle doubled up San Francisco 6-3 and the Dodgers topped Oakland 7-1.

Finally, The Dominican Republic completed a perfect run through the World Baseball Classic by blanking Puerto Rico 3-0 in the championship game at San Francisco.
