WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the NBA, Miami thrashed the Bulls 86-67 for their season-high ninth straight victory last night. LeBron James led the way with 26 points and 12 rebounds on 11-of-15 shooting. Dwyane Wade added 17.

Meanwhile, the Spurs got 31 points from Tony Parker and led the way to beat the Clippers 116-90 for their fifth straight victory. The Spurs improved to an NBA-best 22-10 on the road.

In other NBA news, The Knicks have traded swingman Ronnie Brewer to Oklahoma City for a 2014 second-round pick and cash and signed Kenyon Martin.  Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Jerry West all spoke at a memorial event to honor Lakers owner Jerry Buss.

Checking the NHL now, in their first game since firing their coach, the Buffalo Sabres lost to Toronto 3-1. The New York Islanders ended Montreal's five-game winning streak with a 4-3 overtime victory. Rookie Thomas Hickey's first NHL goal was the game-winner. Ottawa slid past the Rangers 3-2 in double overtime. Florida topped Philadelphia 5-2. Winnipeg beat Carolina 4-3. New Jersey defeated Washington 3-2. Boston doubled up Tampa Bay 4-2. Columbus beat Detroit 3-2 and Vancouver won against Dallas 4-3.

In top 25 college basketball, No. 6 Duke overpowered Virginia Tech 88-56 and California edged ahead of No. 23 Oregon 48-46.

In Bracketbuster action this weekend, UAlbany will take on Fairfield Saturday. Vermont will face off against Canisius. Iona takes on Indiana State and on Sunday Siena faces Radford.

After a delay caused by snow Wednesday, the PGA’s Match Play Championship in Arizona resumed and top seeds Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy both were eliminated.

Finally, the Daytona 500 kicks off this Sunday.
