Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points and won his rematch with Kevin Garnett as the New York Knicks ended an 11-game losing streak in Boston with an 89-86 victory over the Celtics on Thursday night. Matt Moulson and Michael Grabner scored two goals each, and the New York Islanders rallied for a 7-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs last night. Moulson had one of four third-period goals for the Islanders, who overcame a 3-1 first-period deficit. Grabner had two goals, and Keith Aucoin also scored in the third for New York. The Philadelphia Flyers won their first game of the season, 2-1 over the New York Rangers last night. The Flyers not only avoided their first 0-4 start in team history, they beat the Rangers for the first time in two seasons. The Rangers defeated the Flyers all six games last season, including a win in the Winter Classic. Both teams are last in the Atlantic Division at 1-3

Elsewhere in the NHL Buffalo doubled down Carolina 6-3. Montreal bettered Washington 4-1.Ottawa trumped Florida 3-1. St. Louis defeated Nashville 3-0. Chicago slid past Dallas 3-2.Colorado blew out Columbus 4-0. San Jose won against Phoenix 5-3. Checking College Basketball Scores2nd ranked Michigan beat Purdue 68 53. UCLA defeated 6th ranked Arizona 84-73. Richmond won against 19th ranked VCU in overtime. And 23rd Mississippi bested Tennessee 62-56.

In Major league baseball Arizona has traded outfielder Justin Upton to the Atlanta Braves as part of a seven-player deal. He joins brother B.J. Upton, who recently signed a free agent contract with Atlanta.

The second spot in the men's title match at the Australian Open will be determined shortly. That will happen when second-seed Roger Federer plays third-seed Andy Murray. The winner will face two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in the championship match on Sunday.
