Behind the scoring of Carli Lloyd the American women won the gold medal in soccer. The U.S. gained a measure of revenge by beating Japan in the gold medal game 2-1. The US lost to Japan in penalty kicks in last year’s World Cup final.

America's Ashton Eaton can now be called, "The World's Greatest Athlete." After setting the world record at the US trials in June, Eaton won the gold medal in the Olympic decathlon by 198 points. Usain Bolt won the 200 meters in 19.32 seconds to become the first man with two Olympic titles at that distance.

The unbeaten U.S. women's volleyball team advanced to the Olympic final with a straight-set victory over South Korea and will play for the title Saturday against defending Olympic champion Brazil. The American team lost to Brazil 3-1 in the final at the 2008 Beijing Games.

The IOC is set to formally strip American cyclist Tyler Hamilton of his gold from the 2004 Athens Games after his admission of doping. After years of denials, Hamilton told CBS's "60 Minutes" last year that he had repeatedly used performance-enhancing drugs.

In the same interview, Hamilton admitted to seeing former teammate Lance Armstrong use performance-enhancing drugs. Armstrong's fight with U.S. anti-doping officials is going before a federal judge in Austin, Texas today. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency says Armstrong used steroids and blood boosters to win the Tour de France from 1999-2005. He faces a lifetime ban from the sport and could be stripped of his titles if found guilty. His lawyers will argue in court that the doping agency's investigation and arbitration process are unfair and violate his constitutional rights.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says the league is prepared to lock out its players if a new collective bargaining agreement is not reached by Sept. 15, when the current deal expires.

R.A. Dickey of the Mets pitched a complete game for his 15th win of the season this afternoon. In the process he stopped the 26-game hitting streak of Miami's Jose Reyes. The 6-1 win snapped a nine-game home losing skid. In the AL the Yankees held on to beat the Tigers 4-3 and the Cleveland Indians beat Boston 5-3. The Red Sox have lost seven of nine.
