There's already been a diplomatic gaffe at the Olympics. During the introduction of a North Korean women's soccer player today, organizers mistakenly showed the South Korean flag on the jumbo screen. The match against Colombia was delayed for nearly an hour after North Korea refused to take the field. Organizers apologized, and the game got under way.
The incident seemed to inspire the North Koreans, who blanked Colombia 2-0.
Earlier, Alex Morgan scored twice, Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd had a goal apiece and the U.S. women's soccer team rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to beat France 4-2 in its Olympic opener in Glasgow. The Olympic soccer tournament got under way two days before the opening ceremony and 400-plus miles away from London. Soccer is one of two sports that starts early so it can play a full slate of games. Archery is the other. The Americans next play Colombia on Saturday.
The Mets cannot seem to break a losing streak losing their 12th of the past 13 games to the Washington Nationals yesterday. The 5-2 loss completed a sweep for the Nationals who sit a comfortable 11½ games ahead of the Mets. The Mets begin a series with hopefully more evenly matched Diamondbacks tonight in Arizona.
The Yankees pulled out a 5-2 win over Seattle, going two out of three in the series. Two days after a surprising pre-game trade, last night could very well be Ichiro Suzuki’s final appearance in Seattle. His contract expires after the season and the Yankees do not make another trip to the Pacific Northwest this season.

Though the Giants came out of last year Super Bowl Champions, Big Blue ranked last in the NFL in rushing yards. As Giants’ training camp begins tomorrow at the University of Albany without RB Brandon Jacobs, who signed with the San Francisco 49ers, all eyes will be on Ahmad Bradshaw to handle the bulk of the work. Bradshaw battled a foot injury last season and went 659 yards with nine touchdowns in 2011.
