Worker Co-op Greenhouse To Mark First Anniversary

Wellspring Harvest

The largest urban commercial greenhouse in Massachusetts is marking its one-year anniversary.

The Wellspring Harvest greenhouse was built on the once badly polluted former Chapman Valve site in the Indian Orchard neighborhood of Springfield.

It is a year-round hydroponic farm that trains and employs local people to grow lettuce and other produce with an eventual opportunity to share ownership in the business, according to Fred Rose, co-director of the Wellspring Cooperative Corporation.

"Part of our mission is to bring investment back into inner city nieghborhoods," said Rose.

Product from the greenhouse can be found in over 25 Big Y Food stores and is sold to seven institutions.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
