New York Congressman Antonio Delgado has introduced a bill to help retain young people in rural communities by offering student loan relief.
The Rural Revitalization Now Act would provide up to $50,000 in student loan relief for people who commit to live and work in rural communities for at least eight years. Delgado says many students who attend college in towns and villages move to metropolitan areas afterwards, in part, because of student loan debt that has them looking for work elsewhere. The legislation would create a program to provide borrowers with student debt relief on their federal or private student loans if they live in a very rural area, a small or mid-sized community that is losing population, or a community that has been affected by a major disaster. Delgado introduced the bill with Democratic Iowa Representative Abby Finkenauer.
