Campsites and lean-tos that were temporarily closed in some areas of the Adirondacks have been re-opened.
The New York state Department of Environmental Conservation announced Monday that campsites and lean-tos in the Lake Colden area of the Adirondacks have been re-opened.

The High Peaks camping and hiking areas had been closed following an increase in bear encounters.

The DEC says black bear activity starts to increase in June as the breeding season begins and yearlings seek out their own territory.

Recommendations to reduce human-bear interactions are on the DEC’s website.
