A new report says Massachusetts cities and towns have a lot of work to do to prepare for a big change coming with this year’s elections.

For the first time in Massachusetts, voters will be able to cast ballots for up to 11 days prior to Election Day.

A survey by election reform advocates found 40 percent of local election officials are in the final planning stages for early voting. 13 percent have not started planning.

In Springfield, Election Commissioner Gladys Oyola said she’s finalizing the hours for early voting and the locations.

" It is still kind of up in the air at this point," said Oyola.

The early voting period in Massachusetts will run from October 24 to November 4.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
