First Lady Michelle Obama Campaigns For Martha Coakley

Martha Coakley’s campaign for governor in Massachusetts got a boost Friday from Michelle Obama.

The first lady was the feature attraction at an afternoon political rally at the historic Strand Theater in Boston.  She praised Coakley  for supporting a higher minimum wage, earned sick time, and universal preschool.

"Martha. She gets it," Mrs. Obama told the cheering crowd. " She understands there is nothing we wouldn't do for our kids, nothing!"

Mrs. Obama stressed the importance of women and minorities going to the polls in large numbers.

Coakley said the get out the vote effort is crucial.

" We know this race is going to be won at the grassroots. It is not the best way to win, it is the only way to win."

Polls show Coakley and Republican Charlie Baker are in a dead heat.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
