The Massachusetts Republican Party is now offering to certify Tea Party affiliated candidate Mark Fisher, a move that could set up a contested primary for governor.
The party maintains Fisher came up a few votes short of what he needed to qualify for the ballot at the March convention where delegates overwhelmingly endorsed Charlie Baker for governor. Fisher sued claiming convention rules were violated. In a court filing Wednesday party leaders deny wrongdoing, but say the litigation has become a distraction and a drain on party resources. Fisher is planning to hold a news conference Thursday. Mark Eno, publisher of Red Mass Group said a primary for governor will prevent the GOP from promoting a unified ticket.
"I hurts down ballot races where some of the coordination that could have happened might not happen"
A spokesman for Baker said he wants a quick and fair resolution.
