New York state forest rangers found a mountaintop campsite used by a 28-year-old New Jersey man as they continued their search Wednesday for the hiker in the Adirondack High Peaks.

Authorities say Alex Stevens, of Hopewell, was last seen by other hikers Saturday evening at the base of Wallface Mountain, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Lake Placid. Officials say he was wearing shorts and sandals in the steep, rugged terrain.

His campsite was found at the top of Wallface.

State forest rangers say Stevens set out last week for a three-day hike in the High Peaks Wilderness. Friends in New York City reported him missing when he failed to meet up with them.

More than two dozen forest rangers and volunteers and state police helicopters have been participating in the search.
