SUNY Plattsburgh Student Dies After Jump From River Bridge

State Police say a 21-year-old college student from Long Island has died after jumping from a bridge into a northern New York river.

Troopers say Evan S. Gillies of Huntington failed to resurface after jumping into the Saranac River in Schuyler Falls on Sunday afternoon. Friends called emergency crews and his body was recovered from the river more than an hour later. Gillies was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

According to the Plattsburgh Press Republican, the bridge over the river has been closed for years.

Gillies was a junior in business administration at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. Schuyler Falls is southwest of the school.
