Plea Deal Sought For Alleged Prison Break Accomplice

Pat Bradley/WAMC

The lawyer for a former New York prison employee accused of helping two murderers escape says he is working on a plea agreement.

Attorney Stephen Johnston says he hopes there will be a plea agreement presented in Joyce Mitchell's case on Tuesday morning during a scheduled appearance in a Clinton County court. Johnston said there have been discussions on a deal, but he could not give details.

Authorities said Mitchell, a tailor shop employee, supplied David Sweat and Richard Matt and with hacksaw blades and other tools. She agreed to be their getaway driver but backed out at the last moment.

Matt was killed three weeks after the escape from Clinton Correctional Facility. Sweat was captured.

Johnston said Mitchell was holding up in jail but was depressed and anxious.
