5 Staff Charged In Disabled Teen's Assault At Facility In NY

State authorities say five staff have been charged in the assault on a disabled teen and a subsequent cover-up at the Sunmount Developmental Center in Tupper Lake.

Special Prosecutor Patricia Gunning says the 18-year-old victim sustained a head injury, concussion and seizure from an assault by 28-year-old Corey Casciaro

According to the Franklin County indictment, Casciaro faces a misdemeanor assault charge. He and three other staff face felony counts of falsifying records, and a fifth employee is accused of misdemeanor falsely reporting an incident.

All five have pleaded not guilty and were released. Four are under probation supervision.

The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, which runs Sunmount, says it will work with authorities to ensure the staff are thoroughly investigated.

The case was investigated by state police and the state Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs.
