Authorities say a 22-year-old college student from western New York has died in a snowboarding accident at an Adirondack ski area.

State police have identified Austin White of Hemlock in Livingston County as the man who died in the accident Sunday afternoon at Whiteface Mountain, near Lake Placid. Troopers say he ran off the intermediate Excelsior trail and into a wooded area, where he hit a tree. The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports that White was not wearing a helmet.

He was pronounced dead a short time later at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Officials at the State University of New York College at Brockport have confirmed White attended the school, where he was a senior studying exercise science. He was scheduled to graduate in May.

Family members tell Rochester-area media that White was in the Adirondacks for spring break and was at Whiteface with a group of friends and his girlfriend.
