The upstate arena that's the longtime home of minor league hockey and the New York state high school boys basketball championships could be up for sale.

The Post-Star of Glens Falls reports that the Glens Falls Common Council on Tuesday approved a measure to seek bids for an appraisal of the publicly owned Civic Center.

Mayor John Diamond wants a referendum on the November ballot on whether the city should offer the Civic Center for sale.

The 4,800-seat arena opened in 1979 in downtown Glens Falls, 45 miles north of Albany.

The venue is the home ice for the Adirondack Phantoms of the American Hockey League. The top affiliate of the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers is expected to relocate for the 2014-15 season to a new arena in Allentown, Pa.
