Driver Dies in Ambulance Crash on Northern NY Road

Authorities say the driver of a volunteer ambulance had a fatal heart attack, causing an accident in northern New York that left two medical crew members and a patient hospitalized.

State police say 45-year-old Eric Monty of Mooers was driving the Champlain EMS ambulance when it ran off the road at a curve and hit a ditch and then an embankment around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday in Altona, northwest of Plattsburgh, near the Canadian border.

Monty was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ambulance crew members Susan Roberts and Peter Coulombe and patient Gary Lamarche were injured.

Roberts and Lamarche are in stable condition at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Coulombe is in critical condition at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt.
