New York Republicans are gathering starting today to nominate Long Island Congressman Lee Zeldin for governor on his home turf.

The state convention comes just after Democrats nominated Kathy Hochul for a full term.

Republicans haven’t won a statewide election since 2002, but are hoping to build on gains from local elections in 2021.

For analysis, we speak with Capitol Correspondent Karen DeWitt.

Karen DeWitt is Capitol Bureau chief for New York State Public Radio, a network of public radio stations in New York state. She has covered state government and politics for the network since 1990.
A lifelong resident of the Capital Region, Ian joined WAMC in late 2008 and became news director in 2013. He began working on Morning Edition and has produced The Capitol Connection, Congressional Corner, and several other WAMC programs. Ian can also be heard as the host of the WAMC News Podcast and on The Roundtable and various newscasts. Ian holds a BA in English and journalism and an MA in English, both from the University at Albany, where he has taught journalism since 2013.
