After more than two decades, the president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy will step down next year.

Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson became the first African-American woman to lead a top-ranked research university in 1999. She announced her decision to leave her position on July 1st, 2022, when her current contract expires.  

In a letter to the campus community, Jackson said has been the “privilege and honor” of her professional career to serve as RPI’s 18th president, and highlighted investments in academic, research, and residential facilities.
