The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has directed the operator of a landfill across the Hudson River from the state capitol in Albany to address recent reports of blowing dust.
DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced new enforcement actions against SA Dunn & Company on Thursday.
The operators of the Dunn Landfill in Rensselaer have been directed to hydroseed sand piles at the facility to ensure dust is contained on site.
Last month the landfill was ordered to improve operations and address odors. Dunn is installing a gas collection system and DEC says it will deploy air monitoring devices to test for hydrogen sulfide emissions. The operators are also required to increase the frequency the landfill covers waste on site from weekly to daily.
In August, the operators were required to pay a $100,000 penalty to address dust and mining violations. A $225,000 payment was also made to the state’s Environmental Benefit Projects fund for neighborhood improvements.
