A New York State Assemblyman is pushing for legislation intended to benefit those living with autism at local hospitals as budget negotiations continue at the state capitol in Albany.

Angelo Santabarbara of the 111th District is seeking to establish sensory-friendly emergency rooms. The Democrat says a quieter setting, dimmed lighting and other amenities would better serve patients with autism.

Santabarbara, who chairs the Subcommittee on Autism Spectrum Disorders, is also proposing integrated Autism Response Teams that would be trained assist patients with special needs in emergency rooms.
