A New York state senator is calling for greater protections for consumers and tougher regulations for credit monitoring firms following the massive Equifax breach.
Democratic Sen. David Carlucci of Rockland County tells the Associated Press Thursday that he wants to the see the Legislature require credit monitoring firms to offer free credit checks and credit freezes to any consumer.
Carlucci's proposals also include greater regulations and licensing requirements that he says will help protect consumers and ensure the credit-monitoring firms are held accountable for lapses in security.
Last month Carlucci led a hearing that focused on the Equifax breach, which exposed personal information for 145 million Americans and 8 million New Yorkers.
An Equifax spokeswoman has said her company is "actively engaging" with state and federal officials.
