Primaries were held statewide in New York yesterday.
In NYC, Mayor Bill de Blasio won with 74 percent of the vote. He had been considered the easy favorite against sal albanese, Richard Bashner, Robert Gangi and Michael Tolkin, none of whom had his organizing power or financial muscle.
De Blasio goes on to face Republican State Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, of Staten Island, and Independent candidate Bo Dietl, a private detective, in November's general election.
In Westchester County, in the Democratic county executive race - George S. Latimer captured 63 percent of the vote while Ken Jenkins garnered 36 percent of the vote.
Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan handily defeated challenges from two fellow Democrats, Common Councilman Frank Commisso Jr. and Council President Carolyn McLaughlin with 50 percent of the vote in yesterday’s mayoral primary.
Former Albany councilman Corey Ellis won a three-way race for Albany Common Council President in the Democratic primary yesterday.
According to unofficial Albany County Board of Election results, Ellis defeated Albany County legislator Chris Higgins and Councilman Mark Robinson with 51 percent of the vote. Ten of the 15 council seats also faced Democratic primaries yesterday. Several incumbents appeared to have been defeated.
Meanwhile, State Assemblyman Steven McLaughlin declared victory in the Republican primary for Renssealer County Executive. However Deputy County Executive Christopher Meyer isn’t ready to concede. At last count, McLaughlin leads 2,708 to 2,369 votes for Meyer. McLaughlin also leads 537 to 503 in the Conservative primary. There are also nearly 700 absentee ballots.
Elsewhere in the state, Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren defeated former journalist Rachel Barnhart and Monroe County Legislator James Sheppard in their Democratic primary.
And in Buffalo, Mayor Byron Brown won a Democratic contest against City Comptroller Mark Schroeder and County lawmaker Betty Jean Grant.
