Services Announced For Late Schenectady Public Safety Commissioner

Services will be held Friday and Saturday for Schenectady’s Commissioner of Public Safety Wayne Bennett, who died this week at age 71.

Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett died Tuesday after a battle with cancer.

A retired State Police Superintendent, Bennett was hired by former Schenectady Mayor Brian Stratton in 2007 at a time of turmoil within the city police department after a scandal involving the arrest of several officers.

Bennett also served as Deputy Mayor under current Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy.

Services for Bennett are Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the State Police Academy at 1220 Washington Avenue, Building 24 in Albany, and on Saturday at St. Mary’s Church at 10 Lodge Street, also in Albany.
