Saratoga Springs School District Holds Meeting On Cartoon Controversy

Concerned and supportive parents attended a special Saratoga Springs City School District board meeting last night to discuss one teacher’s use of political cartoons. The lesson in question drew fire from conservative parents, two of whom appeared on Fox News last week.

Two mothers from the group “Saratoga Conservative Chicks” appeared on the opinion show Fox and Friends last week where they spoke out against the use of political cartoons in a lesson at Saratoga Springs High School. The pair were alarmed at cartoons they said compared President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler.

A special school board meeting was held to discuss the issue Thursday night.

The district conducted an investigation into the lesson and said facism as a concept was discussed in a student debate on the accuracy of media portrayal. The district says the teacher who facilitated the debate “maintained a neutral position throughout.”

Saratoga Springs superintendent Michael Piccirillo was unavailable Friday morning, but said in a statement last week that the district continues to reinforce its policy “which states that employees will in no way impair the non-partisan position of the schools.”
