Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced actions intended to protect civil rights and combat hate crimes in New York.

Speaking at a Harlem church on Sunday morning, Governor Cuomo condemned racially biased attacks and hate crimes in New York and across the country that have been reported since election day.

“I wish I could say that our beautiful state of New York was immune to this poison, but it’s not,” said Cuomo.

Cuomo announced the creation of a State Police Hate Crime Unit, expansion of New York’s Human Rights Law to protect all students, and the creation of an emergency legal defense fund for immigrants, regardless of status.
