UPDATE: A call to raise the salary of New York state lawmakers has been rejected.
New York state lawmakers could learn soon whether they'll be getting their first pay raise in nearly two decades.
Lawmakers now make $79,500 for what is technically a part-time job. But many of them say the annual salary hasn't kept up with the cost of living and doesn't reflect the work they put in outside the six-month legislative session.
A commission is expected to announce Tuesday whether lawmakers deserve a raise. Their decision will take effect automatically next year unless lawmakers vote to block it.
While many lawmakers want a raise it's been a touchy political subject following a wave of scandals that have seen more than 30 lawmakers leave office facing ethics or criminal allegations since 2000.
