Ex-Official Admits Lying About Finances While Stiffing NY

money

A former New York state official has admitted lying under oath about being unable to pay restitution for fraud after he put a down payment on a horse farm and helped pay for his daughter's wedding.

Federal prosecutors in Albany say Friday that 55-year-old Joseph Strevell pleaded guilty to perjury for lying during a December 2014 deposition where he was questioned about his ability to pay court-ordered restitution.

Strevell, a former deputy secretary of state, pleaded guilty in 2007 to defrauding New York while serving as head of a state-funded entity.

He was sued by the federal government for not making restitution of more than $111,000.
