New York Lawmakers Call For K9 Veterans Day

WAMC

Every dog has its day, and when it comes to police and military dogs, two New York lawmakers say that day should be March 13.

Republican Sen. Kathy Marchione and Democratic Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara want the state to declare March 13 K9 Veterans Day, joining states like New Jersey and Florida that already picked the day to honor the service of military and police dogs.

The two lawmakers discussed their legislation Friday at the state Capitol and were joined by five police dogs from nearby departments.

March 13 is when the U.S. Army created its canine corps back in 1942. Marchione says it's an appropriate date to recognize the contributions of the thousands of dogs working in the military and at law enforcement agencies around the country.
